A taste of Alsace on Charlotte Street

A new Alsatian-inspired all-day bakery, wine bar and restaurant from debut restaurateurs Solynka Dumas and Julian Oschmann (pictured) has opened in Fitzrovia’s foodie Charlotte Street.

They have hired Holly Hayes, a former 40 Maltby Street sous chef, to run the kitchen, while sommelier Honey Spencer of Sune in Hackney has put together a list of low-intervention wines from small producers across Europe.

Solynka, a French-Swiss food writer, and her partner Julian say: “July is a real passion-project for us, born out of a shared love for entertaining, and using hospitality to create connections and long-lasting memories.

Though we came together in Berlin, the dining scene in London is where we want to be, and where July can really thrive. It’s amazing to be part of the Fitzrovia neighbourhood, surrounded by so many like-minded restaurateurs and a customer group that will definitely relate with what we are trying to build here.”

Pastries and coffee are served from 8am, followed by lunch of soup, stew or sandwiches, with cold cuts and cheeses from 5pm. The dinner menu, served from 6-11pm, includes such Alsatian specialities as white asparagus, braised sausage with sauerkraut, and herb dumplings in broth.

The more eclectic wine list also nods to Alsace, with five white wines and three amber Gewürztraminers from the region. It is headed by eight Champagnes.
