An imposing country-house hotel overlooking the Firth of Clyde, with an Italian garden courtesy of acclaimed designer Gertrude Jekyll. On the food front it's “always reliable”, and now boasts “two dining areas: the Scottish baronial castle itself, and the new glasshouse” – a late 1800s affair similar to one on the Queen's Balmoral estate, and offering informal dining as against the main restaurant's three- and six-course tasting menus.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Sumptuous luxury in beautiful surroundings....
Reviewed 30 days ago

"Sumptuous luxury in beautiful surroundings. Autumn colours a bonus. Had a lunch booking. Appetisers good, bread needs attention. Whilst both tasted goo the focaccia was dry and the truffled bread underproved, a little doughy. Cod was very tasty and cooked perfectly, good flavours in the sauce and accompaniments, however I am not a fan of that "torched" finish. For me the plain white of fish would be better. The duck was beautifully done, again excellent flavours. Dessert had great contrasts in texture and again good flavours. Decent coffee and petit fours to finish."
