You cross the outside terrace (great in summer) to eat at Gary Usher’s welcoming bistro, along from a parade of shops on the Wirral. For fans it’s a “favourite of the Elite Bistros mini chain: the seasonal menus are much the same as at the others but always delicious, with great staff too”.

“A top Sunday roast” is but one attraction of Gary Usher’s Wirral fixture – the original follow-up to Chester’s Sticky Walnut, which opened in 2015 in this Grade-II sandstone building; and which follows the format of its predecessor. Most reports rate its appealing modern bistro cuisine between “very good” and “outstanding”, but ratings slipped a tad this year on the odd report of an “off night”.

“Described as a ‘small, local bistro’… what an example of British understatement!” – Gary Usher’s Wirral outpost (his initial follow-up to Sticky Walnut) continues to win a thumbs-up in feedback. “The friendly, cheerful and very knowledgeable staff make you feel at home instantly, and the food? Novel, inventive, well prepared and VERY tasty!”

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
