A candle-lit temple to the atavistic delights of consuming quantities of ribeye steak and king crab that’s “in fact very good, if grossly overpriced for what it is” (“£100 for a bit of crab!”). But spending big is arguably central to the ‘Beast Experience’ touted (tongue in cheek), on the website: ‘the place will make an impression on your client or whomever, and everyone will remember the occasion’.

“We went for the ‘Beast Experience’ and once we added cocktails and service we ended up spending over £200 per head! A nice meal but certainly not worth the money” – typical feedback over the years on this candle-lit surf ’n’ turf extravaganza, just off Oxford Street. To be fair, the website kind of hints what you are in for (‘The Beast is Inside You. From the dawn of its very existence it has searched land and sea to feast. Craving the extravagance of nature's finest flesh. Relentlessly drawn to flame and fire. Behold you are the Beast…’).

“An amazing place for steaks and spider crab… but, my god, is it expensive!” Nothing changes at Goodman group’s candle-lit, surf ’n’ turf extravaganza, just off Oxford Street, which bills itself as ‘a unique gastronomic experience featuring Norwegian King Crab and hand-selected, dry-aged Nebraskan Angus beef. But, after five years in operation, what’s actually most striking is how little feedback we receive nowadays…

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Great selection meat which has done the airmiles. Not a place where you will minimise your carbon footprint, but the food is excellent and the staff guide you well through the various choices on offer (they vary frequently depending on what they have in the fridge). Good wine list too featuring some interesting non-European wines. "
