This unusually grand and “busy gastropub” near the gates of the Duke of Westminster’s Cheshire estate is “probably the best Brunning & Price”. “We’ve eaten here many times over the years, and while the food has had its ups and downs, recently it’s been of top quality”“it’s best to avoid weekends though, as it can get very busy: the price of success!” Top Tip – lovely garden in summer.

“Looking for a fantastic, well-priced supper? Look no further than The Grosvenor Arms at Alford”. This rather grand country pub (“library, conservatory, bar and snug”) on the edge of the Duke of Westminster’s Cheshire estate maintains “consistently high standards despite being a member of a large chain” – Brunning & Price – for whom this was the group’s first property.

This “brilliant and well-run country pub” owes its grandeur to being ultimately owned by the Duke of Westminster (it’s near the back gate of his Cheshire estate), and was the first to be run by the now ubiquitous Brunning & Price. “Although part of a chain, it doesn’t come across as one. There’s an extensive menu which changes frequently, and a great selection of real ales”.

The original branch of the now-sprawling Brunning & Price empire – an imposing and very character Victorian pub owned by the Duke of Westminster on the edge of his Cheshire estate. Besides pleasant gardens, it has “everything that you’d want in a country gastro pub: a good menu and wine, great bar stocked with special gins and guest beers, but most of all a fab atmosphere”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
