Altrincham's listed market hall dates back to 1879; after a revamp in 2014 it's now Market House, home to six food kitchens (including Tender Cow, La Cucina and Wolfhouse Kitchen), working alongside original market stalls. Eat communally at long wooden tables; the development also includes an outdoor covered market of semi-permanent food stalls (New Market Square) and seasonal outdoor pop-up stalls and markets.

Nick Johnson’s “fun food hall” in a covered Victorian market is “still delivering on all fronts”, with “an excellent choice of stallholders” ensuring a “casual and vibrant lunch or dinner”. “To their credit they’re maintaining high standards” – although things can get fraught at busy times, with “pushy” fellow diners the main problem.

Nick Johnson’s “wonderfully vibrant” transformation of a covered Victorian market into an artisan food hall has a “great atmosphere”, and the “mix of food from different suppliers means that in a group, everyone has something they want to eat”. “The novelty has gone but it’s still holding up standards” – although “queues are too long” and it can be “a battle to get a table”.

Run by Nick Johnson and wife, this reinvented Victorian hall embodies “the very best type of market regeneration”, and is now “ringed with excellent, varied food and drink outlets” (not least pizza gods Honest Crust). It has “caused a big restaurant revival in surrounding streets” since launch – the only problem being that the “buzzy” spot is “sometimes too crowded for its own good”.

A rare beacon amid tales of the death of the high street, the “vibrant” regeneration of Alti’s covered market – which dates back to 1290, and has been reinvented in recent years by local lad Nick Johnson – is heartening indeed. It’s now “a very exciting place to eat”, with a “massive choice of different food” under its Victorian roof – including noted sourdough pizza purveyors Honest Crust, who occupy Market House, the new market’s centrepiece.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
