“A good range of locally caught fish and shellfish” can be enjoyed at this “recently refurbished building” in a “fantastic setting right on the quayside in Amble, with views up to Warkworth along the Coquet and out towards the sea”. It’s “our go-to place when we want to give foreign visitors a taste of traditional fish ’n’ chips” – with the bonus that you can “watch the boats arriving” with tomorrow’s fish. The owners also run the Fish Shack close by.

“If you like fresh fish, this is as good as it gets”, say fans of this “harbourside restaurant” with “great views of the sea”“you can see the boats coming in”, and also survey “the Coquet estuary up to Warkworth Castle”. A former fishing hut, it was extended and refurbished a few years ago by the owners, who also run the nearby Fish Shack – which some “enjoy even more”.

A once-humble fish hut – “right in the heart of Amble’s working harbour” with a “great setting overlooking the estuary” – where the accent is on “excellent fresh fish and seafood” (including “ever-changing specials depending on local catch”). They also have a line in pizza. The owners, also behind the Fish Shack next-door, did an expensive refurb back in 2019 and the “extended space has improved the interior” (also adding a café and bar).

In summer 2019, this once-basic fish hut reopened after a £210K refurb doubling capacity and adding a café/bar (the owners cut ties to two other venues on the Northumberland coast but kept on the neighbouring Fish Shack). Its formula has by-and-large remained intact, namely a “great setting by the harbour in Amble with river views towards a distant Warkworth Castle” (“sometimes a seal appears”) and the provision of “generous seafood platters” from an “excellent selection” (and also sourdough pizza).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
