Next to the South Downs, this Georgian pub (with rooms) has been owned by the Newbon family since 2011. The menu mixes ‘classics’ (burger, fish ’n’ chips, steak) with more brasserie-style items. It was highlighted this year for its “good-value set lunch and pleasant service”.

“A great pitstop whilst in the area” – the Norbury family’s gastropub next to the South Downs is consistently well reviewed in our annual diners’ poll. As well as a selection of pub ‘classics’ the menu includes a number of more ambitious brasserie-style items.

The Norbury family's “lovely gastropub” (with rooms) is useful for a pitstop while exploring the South Downs and coast, owing to its “good” locally sourced dishes, atmospheric bar and roaring Charles II fireplace.

“Wonderful fresh produce and stunning dishes” win fans for the Norbury family’s “fantastic gastropub”, handily placed for the South Downs and coast, and there’s a “great atmosphere” to boot.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Good all round and excellent value for money (set menu). Service was good but would benefit from a softer more gracious approach."
