“Splendid surroundings for a plentiful and tasty afternoon tea” are again noted as a highpoint at this Jacobean/Georgian stately home spa hotel, with grounds laid out originally by Capability Brown and nowadays owned by the National Trust. Top Tip – “they are happy to give you a box for anything you can’t finish!”

“Old-school service and food” are cornerstones of this Jacobean/Georgian stately home spa hotel with grounds by Capability Brown, owned by the National Trust. “Afternoon tea in one of the ante-rooms whilst sat on a sofa is a delight” and it’s a “lovely place for a few days’ stay, too!”.

Dining at this National Trust-owned Jacobean/Georgian mansion “has always been a very nice experience” based on tail-coated waiters and that inimitably English stately-home touch. “A reasonably priced lunch makes it a good meeting place for a small group”, too, even if the food is a little staid for some tastes – as is the decor (“they gotta liven this place up!”).

“A fantastic location with old-fashioned silver service” – this Grade I-listed Jacobean/Georgian mansion is the perfect place to experience stately-home hospitality, complete with waiters in tailcoats. The food may “not be quite up to the mark for the price”, but all feedback is basically upbeat, with no harsh critiques for the dining room’s standards. Now leased to the National Trust and celebrating its 30th anniversary as a grand spa hotel, Hartwell hosted exiled King Louis XVIII after the French Revolution.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
