Harden's says

A new venture from ArtFarm, the hospitality and development company behind The Fife Arms in Braemar; opened in late April 2023 and already visited by HM The King and Queen. Expect stylish interiors and local seasonal fare. There's also a fishmonger attached.

“A little gem” (“in an area where food is often mediocre”) – this “small but trendy restaurant with great seafood and great decorations, and a separate fish shop attached”, is a “really special place to visit”. Chef Marcus Sherry, who runs it with his wife Jasmine, places “emphasis on freshness and availability”, sourcing most of his supplies from small fishing ports on Scotland’s northeast coast. Part of ArtFarm, the international group that also owns the Fife Arms in Braemar, it lives up to the hype surrounding its April 2023 launch, which included a visit from the King and Queen. Top Menu Tips – “there’s a brilliant set-price lunch menu”, and “the partan bree (crab soup) is not to be missed”.

“Newly opened but with great potential” – this April 2023 newcomer threw open its doors just before our annual diners’ poll concluded and elicited just this single comment. But it had already been visited by HM The King and Queen thanks to its sustainability credentials (it supports the Ocean Recovery Project). On the former site of the Rothesay Rooms, it’s now part of ArtFarm’s expanding portfolio – “an impressive and immersive place that you won’t forget in a hurry, and the same goes for the food”, according to The Scotsman’s Rosalind Erskine in her May 2023 review, where she enjoyed “fresh seafood in stylish surroundings” (which becomes more understandable when you find out that “at the helm of this new venture is Jasmine and Marcus Sherry, who worked at the Fife Arms in Braemar” up the road). Rosalind’s choices were “light, fresh, local and unfussy”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Lived up to expectation from other reviews. Fish dishes cooked to perfection. Paran Bree (crab soup) is a stand out dish. Staff friendly and knowledgable. A very welcome addition in an area not known for high quality restaurants."
