“Very atmospheric, rustic and friendly, and with exceptional seafood” – this cosy venue is one of the best-known in the city (and also has a sister establishment in Dundrum) – “have eaten here several times and would certainly recommend it”. Last year we commented on its excellent newly extended beer garden with gazebos, which in July 2023 was the victim of an arson attack – here’s hoping it’s soon restored to its former glory.

“Having helped create Belfast’s vibrant foodie vibe”, this well-known venue is still “a must-visit in the city”. “Small and cosy, with wooden tables and a great atmosphere”, it serves a “varied menu in generous portions, with interesting specials alongside staples”. A newly extended beer garden with gazebos and heaters also offers street-food-style menu from ‘The Shack’. Top Menu Tip – “the mussels are always superb”.

“Good fish in down-to-earth surroundings” has won renown for this simple haunt (which has an offshoot in Dundrum) serving its own shellfish direct from the owners’ beds.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"We went because it was in Hardens and were rewarded with the most memorable chowder we've ever had. Full of salmon, cod, richness and so much flavour. Home cured salmon good too. Next time I might just have chowder for two courses..."
