The “junior sister to Adam’s” on Bennetts Hill “is one of the rare places in Birmingham where the diner can enjoy fine fish dishes, though some of them are rather expensive” (albeit not quite as expensive as its acclaimed sibling). “Not surprisingly, the diner may start with a choice of oysters” but there’s a wide range of other “excellent” fishy dishes too (including caviar for the plush) and, while it “couldn’t be further from the sea, it makes up for it with the quality of the food” – also now available to sample in their newly refurbished ‘Aphrodite’s Bar’.

Adam Stokes’ more casual – but still very posh, down to the marble-topped tables – offshoot to his acclaimed Adam’s, on nearby Bennett’s Hill; it “not surprisingly specialises in fish and seafood dishes”, reflecting the name, and while ratings tend to be rather up and down, there are early reports of some “lovely” cooking since the 2023 arrival of new chef Stuart Langdell, whose CV includes Simpson’s in Birmingham, and MPW’s Pear Tree Inn in Whitley, Wiltshire.

“The food is always great” – especially the oysters – at this “reliable” seafood outlet which is the more relaxed option from chef Adam Stokes, whose high-flying flagship Adam’s is nearby. But diners expecting the same standards as his main gaff might be in for a “disappointment”: ratings here are more generally good rather than outstanding and service has its ups and downs.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
