“Completely consistent… they still do the best ever Pizza Napoletana” – this huge Italian ‘Ristorante & Pizzeria’ just outside Preston was opened in 1985 and has grown over the years to house 300 guests in one sitting, of whom about a third are in a striking glazed extension, complete with al fresco terrace.

A Lancashire institution, this huge Italian restaurant just outside Preston has passed the test of time over more than 35 years, accommodating 300 guests at a sitting – a third of them in a glass-fronted extension that adapts to al fresco dining in the summer. The scale and popularity make it feasible to run a menu broad enough to cater for all tastes, from a very 1960s pizza Hawaiian via fresh raw oysters to niche Fassone beef, imported like so much of the authentic produce (and the wine) from Italy. Standards are rated “good all-round” or better, and a decent two-course mid-week lunch can be enjoyed for less than £20.

“Expanding again to highlight how popular it is”“this already vast Britalian restaurant on the outskirts of Preston has just added an enormous extension (primarily a bar) into which you could probably fit The Ritz’s dining room” – and “the whole operation is remarkable given its size”. It’s the “very good and reasonably priced food” that draws the crowds (“your favourite pizzas and pastas”) “but it’s the specials menu where the most interest lies”, plus “stuff they don't cook” – ie oysters and “Italian charcuterie imported direct from the owning Bragagnini family’s homeland in Friuli, as is much of the wine”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
