“Either a restaurant with its own farmers’ market or a farmers’ market with a restaurant, depending on your priorities” – either way, “fruit and veg come from within a few miles, while meat and fish are of the highest quality”.

“Located in Canterbury’s permanent farmers’ market, so it’s really buzzing at lunchtimes”, this informal spot has had a strong local following across two decades. “It’s not elaborate food – the ingredients are sourced from the market and left to speak for themselves” – but it’s backed up by a “good-value wine list”. A word of warning for winter: “the food’s good, but you’re sitting in a converted goods shed and boy it’s cold. We kept our coats on for the whole meal”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Lovely spot showcasing local Kentish produce within a short walk of the cathedral. Parsnip soup, pumpkin tart and salad bowl all excellent - as were the Docker beers. "
