“An excellent meal with a very interesting menu!” – praise for this modern venue with an open kitchen which occupies a grand former banking hall in the centre of this regional market town. The Guardian’s Grace Dent is also a fan – in her April 2023 review she applauded “a special-treat place… and one that the community clearly loves”: “fancy, hearty and possibly a little more pricey than everywhere else around these parts” – a “menu of fine-quality local meat, fish and veg, served in painstakingly concocted ways”.

“This brilliantly run restaurant has taken dining out in the area to new heights” since opening three years back; a “great building” – a slicky revamped former bank on the high street – sets the stage for Ed Pook's “accomplished cooking” (steak a highlight), informed by a foraging ethos.

“Surprisingly exceptional” – this yearling occupies a converted old bank on the high street that’s been stylishly refurbished and where Ed Pook “specialises in using local produce and foraging for ingredients” to provide a very high quality offering, with prime steak something of a speciality (but by no means the defining factor). “The addition of a wine store allows them to stock a long list of wines by the glass”. “Excellent – worth a visit”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
