“Prime manages to feel special and cosy all at once” – a family-friendly steak specialist where the main event is dry-aged on the bone and “not cheap but well worth it” for a “special occasion choice”. This branch recently added a new canopied gin garden with heating in winter, and you can also check out a trio of siblings in St Albans, Beaconsfield and Berkhamsted.

“Lovely steaks and Sunday roasts” plus “lots of fresh vegetables and salads” tick the boxes at this local trio (branches in St Albans and Beaconsfield), specialising in British grass-fed beef, dry-aged on the bone. The banquette seating and kids’ activity sheets and menu make them good “family-friendly” eating options.

The clue is in the name! – it’s the British beef, grass-fed and dry-aged on the bone, then cooked to order that hogs the limelight at this mini-chain, also with outposts in St Albans and Beaconsfield. It secured very respectable marks this year if little in the way of commentary.

“Friendly staff and one hell of a steak” earn solid praise for this converted pub with a focus on Scottish Highlands beef – part of a group with smaller branches in St Albans and Chandler’s Cross. It’s “not economical but great for a celebration” – and has a private dining room for parties.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
