“This welcome new restaurant in a former Cornish pasty shop” from local chefs Sam Edwards & Jak Doggett (who previously ran the Firehouse at Upton) offers “well sourced, original dishes”“and there’s a strong sense that the chefs actually enjoy cooking”. “This is not conventional ‘fine dining’, but it’s very good food, nicely served, at a very reasonable price”. Top Menu Tips – “curry crab fried rice and a fine pork chop with crushed celeriac, prosciutto, and cavolo nero were excellent”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Had a great family meal at Sam & Jaks. Full menu range covered, with the curry crab and fish dishes being voted best selections out of 5 different mains eaten. Service was good and the different areas allow noise not to be a problem. Best in Cirencester."

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Observer

“An unpretentious, but beguiling little bistro.”

Jay Rayner popped to Cirencester to review Sam & Jak, whose owners Sam Edwards and Jak Doggett previously “ran the very much-loved Upton Firehouse in a broad shed not far away at Burford”. Jay reviewed their work in 2010 at Made By Bob (also in Cirencester, now known as MBB).

“The menu is tight and in places, market-sensitive… there are flourishes and there is pizzazz… at lunchtimes they have a short pizza menu.” Really, what more could anyone ask for?

“Fish cookery is a strength here” (the owner of Made by Bob worked at Bibendum – “there is a lovely story here, of skills and good taste being passed down kitchen generations… the culinary golden threads get pulled through the decades”).

“Everyone at Sam & Jak knows exactly what they’re doing. The result is the kind of meal you always hope for and don’t always get.”
