This 250-year-old Lune Valley gastroboozer-with-rooms has the claim to fame of having appeared on Ramsay’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ back in 2006. Fast-forward 17 years and several owners, and it’s in the hands of The Oakman Group, and now, say fans, “always worth a visit” – being “probably the best place to go for fish in the Lancaster area” (quite the turnaround, then!).

This “buzzy and busy but welcoming” old Lune Valley inn focuses on “excellent locally sourced fish from Morecambe Bay or the Irish Sea” – including a “good but enormous seafood platter to share, which you need to book in advance”. Now part of Oakman Inns, it’s a “convenient and comfortable place to stay near Lancaster and the M6”, en route to the Lake District or Scotland.

This atmospheric 250-year-old inn has “reopened under new ownership – having been taken over by the Oakman Group based in Tring, Hertfordshire”. “The seafood is as good as ever – very fresh and well cooked” (and with “fabulous fruits de mer”) and, though it’s early days, even fans of the old team “wish it well. It's very convenient for an overnight stay from Junction 34 on the M6” with its “cosy bedrooms”.

“A gastropub favourite” – this 250-year-old inn, part of the regional Seafood Pub Company group, is “a top choice for fish in north Lancashire/southeast Cumbria”, “even if you just want fish ’n’ chips superbly cooked and presented”. “The meat is not bad too”, while its “excellent rooms” make it a perfect stop en route to the Lake District.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
