Jamie Oliver’s parents Trevor & Sally retired from this sixteenth-century village gastropub after 44 years in November 2020, so it has recently changed hands: it’s now a part of the 12-strong Chestnut group of pubs. The Olivers always ran the Cricketers well, but regulars say “(even in the tepee) the food is possibly up a notch”.

Trevor & Sally Oliver have run this village pub for 43 years – they moved in when their nowadays-world-famous son Jamie was a baby, and he helped out in the kitchen as a teenager. Its pub-grub avoids fancy fireworks, but is consistently well-rated. Like his son, Trevor grew up in an Essex pub, training as a chef and becoming a licensee at the tender age of 19, and was a pioneer of the notion that pubs could serve really good food.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"sadly a pale shadow of its former self. having been bought out from original owners, the quality of the food has plummeted and service speed is appalling (even when not busy). we have been a few times over last couple of years hoping that it might improve but nothing changes. it used to be a bit of a local institution but no longer"
