This “charmingly higgledy-piggledy venue” may look like it springs from medieval times, but was in fact created in 1927, when a member of the Guinness brewing family commissioned it from an antiquarian and architect. Nowadays it sprawls over thirty acres leading to the coastline, replete with numerous houses and cottages offering accommodation, a hotel and spa, and a dining room with tapestry-hung walls, where diners can enjoy a solid menu based on Sussex produce.

This “beautiful” hotel a few minutes’ walk from the sea is “very popular and it’s not hard to understand why”“the Guinness family’s impressive recreation of a medieval settlement”, built 100 years ago, is “like a film set”. Its dining room is very much “a ‘hotel restaurant’, though a decent one”, with “traditional and well-prepared food”.

Built in the 1920s by a lord from the Guinness brewing family in medieval style – complete with salvaged windows and doors – this spa-hotel is a short stroll from the coast. It’s “an idyllic setting, with attentive staff and top cuisine”.

A plush spa-hotel, medieval in style, but actually built in the 1920s for a Guinness scion, and located a short stroll through woodland to the Climping coastline (Arundel castle is also within easy reach); the dining room, with its tapestry-adorned walls and mullioned windows, was consistently highly rated last year (if on limited feedback).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
