Since 2006, chef Hywel Jones has been at the helm of the kitchen of this traditional, period dining room which provides a very classical country-house retreat in a rural Palladian mansion: go somewhere else if you want stripped floors and open kitchen, as here you will get swagged curtains, tablecloths, silverware and aperitifs in the lounge. Limited feedback this year, but remaining positive on its high-quality, classically rooted cuisine: there is a tasting menu, but the à la carte offers three courses for £115 per person.

“‘Old school’ dining… perhaps a bit stuffy, but the food’s good” – the dining room of this well-known luxury spa hotel has had, since 2006, chef Hywel Jones at the stoves. You can eat à la carte for £110 per person for three courses, or there’s an eight-course tasting menu for £140 per person, and the deft cuisine won nothing but praise this year. “The wild and woody setting of The Estate and the slightly faded grandeur of The House just make it a rather special place to stay” and it’s also praised for a “delicious afternoon tea in beautiful, elegant surroundings”.

“Wonderful, precise modern British fine dining” is presented with “impeccable service” in the “beautiful surroundings” of this privately owned luxury spa hotel, built in a mish-mash of historical architectural styles. Hywel Jones, who has presided over the signature restaurant since 2006, “is undoubtably one of this country’s very best chefs, known for his tireless mentoring of up-and-coming talent”.

Limited but again highly impressed feedback on the dining possibilities at this Palladian mansion, complete with a mile-long tree-lined driveway and impressive grounds. Chef Hywel Jones presides over a range of tasting menus, with the main option incorporating seven courses for £110. There’s also the option of taking afternoon tea in the hotel or eating in the more affordable brasserie.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
