“Your standard pub this is definitely not” – in fact it’s “quite likely one of the best places to eat in the Winchester area” – a “quintessential Victorian village pub” updated six years ago with a “large, modern dining area” offering a “monthly, small and very well considered menu” along with “excellent service”.

This “lovely pub with great rooms” just outside Winchester was transformed five years ago, giving the Georgian building a smart contemporary look with a solidly rated menu to match – plus a pizza option that operates through the summer months.

This “first-class” pub with rooms in a “nice location near Winchester” was renovated four years ago, so you have a choice of ambience “depending on whether you sit in the original 1780s pub rooms or in the new, Scandi-style extension”. Either way, the food is by most – if not quite all – accounts of “superb quality”.

This 1780s pub in a village near Winchester reopened in late 2018 after an 18-month refurb that saw it “transformed” – with a “sophisticated dining room (now by far the largest section of the establishment)” offering “well-made modern pub classics”. The owners (who also run The Bugle at Twyford) have installed five B&B suites upstairs.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
