This “lovely little pub” on the high street has had quite the history: it was long under John Matthews, owner of Thompson & Son brewery; in 2016, his great-grandson Christopher Hicks took over, and has transformed it into a very stylish hotel replete with Emin artworks and a tandem bicycle for guests. The “really good, mostly local produce” is “beautifully done” and features an “excellent value lunch” as well as popular Scandi-style breakfasts.

The dining room of this “charming contemporary” hotel serves an “innovative and evolving menu”, along with highly rated Scandi-style breakfasts. The 200-year-old venue has been revived by Christopher Hicks, whose great-grandfather once owned it as part of his Thompson & Son brewery business, and with art by Tracey Emin among others on the walls, it’s very much in the spirit of the new Margate, just up the coast.

This “once-rough old pub” on the High Street was taken over by Christopher Hicks (great-grandson of a one-time owner of Thompson & Son brewery, who ran this venue ’till the '50s) a few years back and is now a “charming boutique hotel” that's “packed with DFLs (Down From Londons)”. On the menu, “truly memorable” local/seasonal produce, including pork from the butcher's round the corner; watch out for guest-chef collabs – in Autumn 2021 they enticed in-demand chef Nuno Mendes to spruce up their menu.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
