Harden's survey result
Summary
“Hidden behind scaffolding in a building just off the Royal Mile” on the George IV bridge, this well-established fixture is one of the most commented-on in the city in our annual diners’ poll and “a rare oasis of quality in Edinburgh‘s tourist centre”. The formula is a straightforward one: “a stylish modern interior and a buzzy bar compliment the professional service and serious cooking; ingredients are fresh and high-quality, and the wine list is sensibly priced”. The decor is “comfortable” if “slightly clinical” and “noisy” for some tastes, but the main take-away from reports is that this remains “a must-visit for seafood lovers”.
Summary
The “superb choice and quality” of the fish and seafood at chef Roy Brett’s “lovely” 15-year-old venue in the Old Town make it “an Edinburgh favourite”. “The food (which these days includes some meat dishes) is always cooked to perfection”.
Summary
“Top-notch oysters, shellfish and fish” make Roy Brett’s “superb restaurant” a “must-visit when in Edinburgh” – and a more frequent “treat” for those lucky enough to live nearby. In a new departure last year, selected cuts of British meat were added to the menu, ‘simply grilled to perfection’.
Summary
“Edinburgh’s best fish restaurant – bar none” is a claim often made for Roy Brett’s “excellent” Old Town venue, and long-term fans say it’s “as good as ever”. “My lobster was so fresh and beautifully grilled, the staff were friendly and helpful – a great evening”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Ondine Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Reliable as ever - excellent fish cookery. Such a shame it’s closing, but look forward to its new incarnation "
"Food was as good as ever and the service attentive. Unfortunately there are major buildings works taking place on the buildings so the view from the restaurant is no more"
"The two of us ate here and although we were at the same table our experience was quite different. Service appeared efficient but the glass of fizz recommended was in fact a crisp Spanish white. It was good but not what I’d asked for. The oysters on ice weren’t the best, I’m pleased we didn’t order the fish platter. The lemon sole on the bone was excellent but I couldn’t help thinking that for £38 it should have been served with a few steamed vegetables at the very least "
