Barrie Henderson’s three-year-old near Bruntsfield Links has a far longer history, having started life way back in 1962 under his grandmother Janet, before her original Hanover Street venue (the UK’s oldest veggie) became a casualty of the pandemic. In its second incarnation, the “lovely neighbourhood vegetarian restaurant” (replete with an eye-catching botanical installation on the ceiling) turns out “fabulous homemade salads, pastas and burgers”, some of which have been carried over from Janet’s days, and “the lunch deal menu at £10 is really good value” too.

Barrie Henderson’s Bruntsfield two-year-old has revived a near-sexagenarian institution: Britain’s oldest veggie, which was run by his grandmother Jan on Hanover Street before being scuppered by the pesky pandemic. The gorgeous-looking spot, with woven pendant lights and a grass installation on the ceiling, turns out impressive salads, pastas and tagines – which, despite receiving very solid marks, elicited little in the way of feedback.

This “reliable and good-quality” Bruntsfield restaurant was opened in 2021 by Barrie Henderson, reviving and modernising the 58-year-old vegetarian institution – said to be Britain’s oldest veggie restaurant – which his grandmother Janet ran in the city centre, and which closed down during the pandemic.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Bit too hit and miss. Middle Eastern dishes, fava bean houmous and chermoula aubergine very good. Caponata good, but side salads and haggis lacking taste. Biscoff cheesecake superb."
