Conor Toomey’s “outstanding food continues to surprise and delight” all who experience his “excellent” three-hour no-choice tasting menus (at £150 per person), while there is “good interactive service” and the “wine pairings are the best ever”. The only criticism is directed at the dining room, which is “a little sparse” – with diners saying that cuisine of this monumental quality “deserves a better setting than a glorified shop”.

“Amazing – a faultless, fixed tasting menu, and the best wine pairings ever” – so say fans of Conor Toomey’s small venue a short taxi ride from the city centre. “I hate choice, so I love that there is none!” – the surprise multi-course meal takes about three hours and in 2023 prices will rise to £140 per person.

A surprise tasting menu by chef Conor Toomey is the format at this contemporary and relatively small (six tables) venue. Having nabbed a hard-to-gain 5/5 for its cuisine last year, it suffered from a dearth of feedback in this year’s survey, but was blessed with a star by the tyre men in January 2021.

“An exquisite five or eight course surprise tasting menu is sure to tantalise your tastebuds and create a truly unique dining experience!” – so say fans of Conor Toomey and Mark Slaney’s spacious (just six tables) and elegant yearling. Rated on still-limited early feedback, it’s certainly “a welcome addition to the ever-expanding Edinburgh dining scene” and Scotsman restaurant critic Joanna Blythman left ‘utterly enchanted’ by the cuisine here. For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
