Summary
Ex-Core chef Steven Ellis & pastry-chef wife Ami’s “temple-of-gastronomy-wolf in a comfy-pub-sheep’s clothing” launched two years back and it has a particular focus on local game. The “highly distinctive and skilfully crafted cuisine” (with “venison to the fore”) plus “attentive and courteous service” place it “at the top gastropub level”. NB – while “parking is potentially tricky, one could enjoy a delightful walk in Windsor Great Park before or after a meal here”.
Summary
This “lovely little country pub” tucked away on the edge of Windsor Great Park “fits into almost any category – including bar, romantic, spectacular-fine-dining-at-pub-prices, elegant-and-extravagant in display”. Launched in summer 2021 by ex-Core chef Steven Ellis and his pastry chef wife Ami, it mixes well-turned pub classics at lunchtime with more refined, often game-based dishes in the evening – “when you have amazing produce from Windsor Great Park and put it in the hands of fantastic chefs, the result is nothing short of perfection”. Top Tip – “doughnut heaven: the pheasant doughnut with truffle and parmesan custard blows you away!”
Summary
“A great new venture from a husband-and-wife team” in an “almost-secret location on a Windsor Great Park walk”. Ex-Core chef Steven Ellis and patisserie chef spouse Ami maybe haven’t heard that good gastropubs are unknown in this neck of the woods. They seem to be bucking the trend with this summer 2021 newcomer. Game is a speciality, with venison bon bons, deer pastrami salad, homemade black pudding and venison chipolatas featuring on early menus – “good, honest tasty food”. “Let’s not keep the secret as the food is spectacular in taste and design!”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

The Bailiwick Restaurant Diner Reviews

"The Bailiwick Freehouse This was an incredible way to truly get underway my dining year of 2025. We’ve visited the Bailiwick quite a few times now but this visit will definitely stand out. On saturday evening enjoyed a fantastic Game Tasting Menu of 7 courses which priced at only £80 was amazing value for money. We started the evening with a cocktail at the bar where we enjoyed a nice chat with owners Steven and Ami before taking our seats at the table. We chose a bottle of Lalande de Pomerol La Menotte 2022 that paired perfectly with every course. The menu started with a fabulous selection of Charcuterie and Snacks including Rabbit Chorizo , Pigeon Salami , Rabbit Rilette with Cheese Sable and a heavenly Pigeon Sausage Roll along with a game consommé. This was followed by the Parker House Roll with a Game Bird Liver Parfait , sage and onion butter. Next to come was an excellent Game Terrine , Stuffed Pheasant Leg and Woodcock which was accompanied by an Offal Cottage Pie. Each dish was cooked to absolute perfection and the flavour was stunning. This led us to dessert where first we enjoyed a Rhubarb and Custard pre dessert before the main desserts of an absolutely delicious Tiramisu and a Coconut Rice Pudding Tartlet. We finished with a coffee and sticky toffee doughnuts before being joined for another chat with Steven and Ami. This gave us a chance to personally thank them and the team for an amazing evening from not only the team in the kitchen but the front of house which was led superbly by Lewis. I would highly recommend a visit to the Bailiwick which is set on one of entrances to the Windsor Great Park. The food is amazing and you will be well looked after by the team. Thank You Steven and Ami for a wonderful dining experience and look forward to seeing you all again soon."

"Impressive game, an inviting drinks list and thoughtful service on the edge of the Great Park. The menu doesn’t change much, but dishes are well executed "

"Impressive cooking elevates this Windsor Great Park haunt into the top rank of gastropubs: venison and pig-related dishes are distinctive, while desserts are finely wrought. Our fellow midweek lunches were all having beer and snacks, so the high end meal we enjoyed was all the more creditable."
