A “great location and very good pub food” are the twin attractions of this seventeenth century pub, a short drive from Wrexham, which has a beautiful location next to the Dee. The menu contains an eclectic international selection of dishes (moussaka, red Thai curry, osso bucco…) and in warmer weather they fire up their wood-fired pizza oven.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

Dating back to the mid 17th century and probably much earlier this beautiful riverside inn has been welcoming and refreshing locals and passers-by for centuries. Our aim has been to preserve all its charm, nod nostalgically to the past and remember that proper pubs are always about people and atmosphere while gentling evolving into what a 21st century country pub should offer in terms of food, drink and service, as well as facilities.

Having a warren of larger and smaller rooms means there is space for all walks of life and a variety of predilections from the dedicated drinkers and diners to walkers, bikers, anglers, shooters, canoeists and of course man’s best friend doggies….of the well-behaved variety please.

We use as much fresh local produce as possible but if we really can’t buy it “right” locally we’ll go regional then national etc. All our dishes are produced on-site by our team of chefs to ensure that we can deliver quality fayre at fair prices. Style-wise, the dishes are simply presented, primarily British and have a bias towards game and fish alongside pub classics and spicy world food. All worth travelling an extra mile or two for.

With 5 cask beers on tap and being blessed with a number of extremely good breweries within just a few miles we routinely serve at least one from Wales, one from Shropshire and one from Cheshire with guests appearances coming from further afield.

Wine is also a passion of ours and working with a number of different merchants the list has been carefully chosen to cover a wide range of styles and offer good value for money whatever the cost.

We’ve always loved Gin! It’s currently “In” but no doubt will soon be “Out” but it will always be a great drink, which is why we decided to invest in our own small-batch still, “The Lady Dee” so that we can produce a house gin that we can be truly proud of.
