Harden's says
Chef Nico Simeone has passed this venue - his first, previously known as 111 by Nico - over to Senegal-born chef Modou Diagne; Modou started as a kitchen porter before being trained through the ranks by Simeone. Diners create their own tasting menu.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Modou’s 10-course extravaganza is a must for impressing on special romantic occasions” – “hidden away in the West End”, it was “originally in Nico Simeone’s stable of restaurants”, but he handed over to his protégé Modou Diagne, once a homeless refugee from Senegal who worked his way up through the kitchen brigade. It’s “fantastic value”, with “well-cooked, varied and imaginative” dishes.
Summary
“Modou Diagne never ceases to amaze us” – “the strength of his cooking is unsurpassed” and the ‘Total Trust’ no-choice menu at £25 a head (served on Sunday and Monday nights) is an absolute bargain – even those who found the occasional dish “disappointing” reckon “the concept is good... We’ll be back to give it another try”. The story behind the chef’s rise brings tears to the eyes of hardened reviewers: Modou was a penniless and homeless refugee from Senegal, and worked his way up from kitchen porter under Glasgow chef Nico Simeone (of Six by Nico) to a level where Nico gave him his own restaurant to run.
Summary
“If you had a category for the ‘best gastronomic value for money’, then the 10-course tasting menu available at Modou on Mondays would really be hard to beat!” – Modou Diagne worked his way up through the ranks under Nico Simeone (of Six by Nico) and handed management of this former branch to Modou for him to run it. “His set course menu is exquisite and the competitive price means a fabulous atmosphere: young and old, filling the restaurant in a suburb. Some might feel that the food, and the cocktails, sometimes lack edge in terms of flavour, but this is a great place to spend an evening”. And “he and his staff work exceptionally hard and always deliver”.
Summary
“Set back by the epidemic, but the experience was well worth waiting for” – this attractive West End newcomer opened in August 2020, but many people are only now hearing of it in 2021. The back story is terrific! – chef Nico Simeone (of Six by Nico fame) handed management of this former branch of his chain to Senegal-born chef Modou Diagne, who had started as a kitchen porter before working his way up through the ranks. Our early feedback on the five-course menu for £35 says “he has not only upheld the high standards of Six by Nico, but taken them in his own thoughtful directions. Even greater things are still to come here!” (And The Sunday Times’s Marina O’Loughlin was impressed on her June 2021 visit).
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
