Harden's says

This newly refurbished luxury hotel and spa in the heart of Yorkshire opens in Summer 2019, with Shaun Rankin in charge of the main restaurant; there will also be an Asian restaurant (EightyEight) and a casual all-day restaurant (Fletchers).

“Oozing luxury (as it should do at this price!), but a tremendous experience, especially if you stay over” – Shaun Rankin wins exemplary feedback for this “stunning” and stately venue. The centrepiece of the experience is a “great taster menu” running to 14 dishes for £160 per person, produced with “real class and taste”.

This “handsome old house” makes a “brilliant” showcase for Yorkshire-born chef Shaun Rankin’s talents, honed by decades in Jersey and London. Valeria Sykes spent £70 million converting the country pile into a hotel, and given its almost “intimidating” level of luxury naturally “you may need a second mortgage before booking” (“from the iron gates policed by a uniformed guard, along a coiffed drive, we found a forecourt occupied by four Rolls-Royces, a Lamborghini and assorted top-model Range Rovers!”). On all accounts, though, it’s “quite outstanding in all respects”, not least results from the ten-course ‘Taste at Home’ menu for £145 per person.

“Great for a romantic meal or a special occasion” – Valeria Sykes’s “gorgeous” country-house hotel, opened three years ago after a £70 million makeover, showcases the skills of chef Shaun Rankin, returning to his native Yorkshire after making his name with Ormer in the Channel Islands and London. The food is “second to none”“thoroughly enjoyable!”. Top Tip – “they mix their own tea and I haven’t been able to match the taste of their oolong blend – the best tea I have ever had!”.

An “impressive approach up the drive to the hall” (revealing “plenty of expensive cars in the car park”) sets the tone at this luxurious seventeenth-century country-house hotel, replete with a spa and, astonishingly, five bars. Yorkshire lad Shaun Rankin oversees the fine-dining restaurant, newly acclaimed by the tyre men, and offering “very flavoursome” tasting menus (£70–£130) with a “theatrical” touch (“dry ice for the mist”, etc.). “The elegance and superb staff are worth it alone, but then add a sumptuous tea, and you won't be disappointed.”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
