Expanded over its 50 years in operation – now to 16 rooms – this converted mansion on the Devon/Cornwall border enjoys good views of the Tamar Valley from its dining room. Dinner is a three-course table d’hôte or you can opt for the (only somewhat more expensive) six-course tasting menu for £85 per person. It was well-rated all round this year.

Having fallen off the map rather in recent times, this long-established venue attracted a fair degree of feedback in the current survey. As a hotel, “it’s a wonderful bolt-hole for a break”, “exquisitely situated overlooking the Tamar Valley on the border of Devon and Cornwall”. The restaurant is its “jewel-in-the-crown feature” (existing before it had rooms), but inspired mixed reports. Fans proclaim “very fine cooking and very fairly priced too”, judging it “highly recommended”. Others, though, thought it “really underwhelming”“the menu sounded really delicious and interesting” but results were “nothing special”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
