A tiny 20-seater from ex-Simpsons chef Dan Sweet, who transformed his Covid-era takeaway Qbox on Harborne high street following a crowdfunding campaign. The Observer’s Jay Rayner hailed it as "one of the most exciting new restaurants" of recent times.

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

Do you think it deserves to be better known?

Write a quick review now using our restaurant diary service. That way it might catch our attention. Next survey, you can transfer your diary entry into our survey system. Everyone who contributes 5 or more reviews in our survey will qualify for a free guide.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"A recently opened, intimate 20 seater restaurant which is comfortable and brightly decorated and already popular with locals in particular. The young Birmingham-trained Chef, Dan Sweet, is offering pleasing modern British dishes with a twist that reflects his Italian heritage and delivering a menu full of fresh flavours - heritage tomato on sourdough, a crab risotto, an accurately cooked chicken supreme and a lovely vanilla and basil mille feuille with delicious strawberry sorbet. The flavours are punchy (though perhaps one should agree with the recently visiting national newspaper critic who thought that the crab risotto needed more crab flavour) and the menu has a real feel for seasonality and freshness and inventiveness. Service is very good and nicely judged. Sweet’s new restaurant reinforces the strength of Birmingham’s present dining scene and is a must-visit location for food lovers not just because of the excellent food but the very good value for money it represents (especially lunch at £40 for three courses)."

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Observer

Jay Rayner discovered “as exciting a new restaurant as I’ve encountered in a long while” at ex-Simpsons chef Dan Sweet’s crowdfunded transformation of his former takeaway Qbox on Harborne high street.

It’s a tiny place with just 20 seats and a short menu, “but it bursts with huge
flavours, big ideas and massive ambition. Dinner here was an introduction to a storming talent announcing itself to the world, one clever, delicious, well- priced dish at a time.”

The chef’s rare technical skills and good taste were displayed in the “soft,
creamy, rich and deep liquor” that formed the basis of a white soup of
caramelised onions, “as pale and interesting as a Dior model and just as
poised”, and again in a celeriac cream sauce, “this time with a pointillist
explosion of herb oil”, combined with slabs of salt-baked then roasted
celeriac.
