Harden's survey result
Summary
“Worth the trip to the pretty, hip rural Somerset village of Bruton for an occasion” – Merlin Labron-Johnson’s “incredible” venue enjoys a massive following out of all proportions to its tiny size; and is one of the most commented-on destinations outside London in our annual diners’ poll this year. There’s no menu at this “very farm-to-table oriented place” – for £120 per person (with a cheaper, cut-down lunch alternative) you put yourself in his hands and the “expertly prepared” results are “exquisite… bursting with flavour”. “Service is light but gracious and the atmosphere, in the small but beautifully decorated room, is lovely if lacking a bit of life…” but all that’s about to change since, in autumn 2023 he successfully completed an oversubscribed £125,000 kickstarter campaign to create ‘Osip 2.0’ in a new space. Details to follow.
Summary
“Every mouthful is divine” at ex-Portland and Clipston chef Merlin Labron-Johnson’s “tiny restaurant in rural Somerset” that “dares to be different” – serving a set meal with no menu, “so you just sit back and await the surprises (you receive a menu sheet at the end of the meal)”. “I was absolutely stunned by the intensity of flavours, the simple presentation and responsible sourcing of ingredients”. “Some ingredients I had never tasted before, and the flavour pairings were creative and so exciting” – “what an incredible surprise, superb from start to finish”.
Summary
“A real piece of gastronomic magic” is delivered by Merlin Labron-Johnson (who previously worked at Portland and Clipstone) at this “cute little space” which he opened in late 2019: a ‘tiny farm-to-table restaurant in rural Somerset’. “You are not given a menu before eating so every dish is a surprise”, and while “not showy the food is brilliantly executed with top-notch ingredients” leading to “exciting” flavours. It feels “super-cool” for somewhere out in the boonies. “Worth the 50-mile trip for lunch!”
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Osip Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Osip has moved out of Bruton about ten minutes down the road in the middle of the country side. We came for sunday lunch about a week into opening. I have to say for the quality of cooking it is fantastic value. The flavours pop and wow and it is the vegetables and foraged herbs that are the stars. We had the set menu at £95 which is actually around eight courses in total with the option of adding some of the 'old favorite' dishes such as a game pitvier and the squid, pigs head and black truffle which was totally amazing. For me the star was the beetroot taco with salted egg yoke, the flavours just incredible. You come away content, the courses are not too heavy. Another stand out the meadowsweet icecream, so unusual and the most fabulous texture. The restaurant itself is set like a theatre and we the watching and eating guests. As the sun set it was a chiaroscuro performance to admire. The service was a bit cranky but it was early days when we went. Also thought the room you Sit in on arrival for a cocktail and exquisit local Westcombe charcuterie could be a bit more welcoming and cosy, we arrived on a very wet and thundery lunchtime. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, such a treat, Merlin is a true master in the kitchen."
"Merlin is just a magician with plants - so innovative and imaginative - a tasting experience like nowhere else - as a staunch meat eater it’s the only place which almost makes me wish there wasn’t a meat course ! Stand out dishes - oyster mushroom with leek mayonnaise and the pre/dessert of sorrel ice cream with very slightly salted soft meringue and delicate spring rhubarb ! Keep up the good work ."
