“A lovely setting – tucked away in a quiet-but-central location” beside the remains of Hereford’s castle moat adds to the joys of the Watkins family’s Grade II-listed Georgian hotel. Reports are limited, but all approve the cooking from Hungarian-born chef Gabor Katona (with much produce from the owners’ farm at Ballingham Hall, nearby).

Owned and run by the Watkins family, this hotel is a Hereford fixture and its highly rated restaurant showcases “very good cooking” from Hungarian-born chef Gabor Katona – much of it using produce from Ballingham Hall farm eight miles away, which is also owned by the Watkinses.

A “Hereford stalwart” – the “spacious dining room of a charming hotel, with view over the castle moat” provides an ideal setting for Hungarian chef Gabor Katona’s “really consistent” cooking. The Watkins family, who own and run the hotel, grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and salad leaves and rear Hereford beef at their nearby Ballingham Hall farm – all served in the restaurant.

A “lovely and very friendly” Georgian hotel, overlooking Capability Brown-designed gardens, where chef Claire Nicholls makes the most of the “tasty” vegetables and herbs grown in the kitchen garden, and beef from their own farm, with some very “reliable” cooking.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
