The attractive dining room of this ivy-clad independent hotel on the Holkham Estate, not far from the beach, has a focus on locally sourced food that mirrors the estate’s ambitions in the sustainability stakes. In keeping with the tenor of reports over the years, the food continues to be “a little hit-and-miss, but it’s a terrific setting and the service is usually reliable” at least.

This ivy-clad pub-hotel by the gates of Holkham Hall makes a perfect destination after “a gorgeous walk on Holkham beach” – although its dining room can be “a bit hit-and-miss”“when it’s good it is very, very good, but it can have some really poor days” (fluctuating standards that have bedevilled reports for “over 20 years”).

Slightly mixed, but overall positive reports – as is so often the case – on this well-known pub at the gates of the Earl of Leicester’s Palladian ancestral home, Holkham Hall. The menu is fairly conventional pub grub, although it incorporates venison, beef and lamb from the earl’s land. Much of the appeal is the setting, near a gorgeous beach and with the estate to explore after a meal.

Halfway between a sandy beach and the parkland surrounding Palladian stately home Holkham Hall, Downton-esque nineteenth century inn ‘The Vic’ “has gained a consistency in recent years”, offering a “warmth of welcome, good hearty cooking (“lots of local game including venison”) and plenty of style”; bonus points for the “wonderful estate in which to walk it off!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
