Chef-patron Eric Paxman trained under Marco Pierre White in London and Bill Granger in Australia, and has cooked for luminaries including Arnold Schwarzenegger, who vowed ‘I’ll be back’ – a sentiment shared by numerous guests at the venture he opened in his hometown 14 years ago. “Lunch and early-bird evening specials are an exceptional bargain”.

“Excellent seasonal menus and a bargain early-bird” – not to mention “a top brunch locally” and “the best Sunday lunch” – all fuel satisfaction with Eric Paxman’s well-established local destination.

Chef-patron Eric Paxman honed his talents under MPW and Bill Granger, before setting up this restaurant over a decade ago (sadly his local burger bar PAX bit the dust in 2019). There was the odd sceptic this year, but the majority verdict is that it offers an “enjoyable all-round experience” featuring “a great-value early bird”.

“A favourite in an area with a dearth of good eateries”, this is “a really well-run restaurant, with superb food and a nice location”. Chef-owner Eric Paxman worked in London (under MPW) and Australia (under Bill Granger) before returning to his hometown, where he marks his 10th anniversary in business last year. (“Eric has also ventured into PAX, a local burger bar as well – let’s hope his undoubted talent is not stretched too thinly”).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
