This ivy-clad Georgian coaching inn is the “a top destination for wine in Cambridgeshire” – and “also a good all-rounder” – thanks to its long ownership by Master of Wine, John Hoskins. “Sadly” for their many admirers, John and his wife Julia sold up after 29 years in summer 2023, although the new owners, East Anglia’s Chestnut Group, have promised a ‘seamless transition’ with minimal changes.

“This institution has been a feature of Cambridgeshire life for 50 years” – an ivy-clad Georgian hotel in a “lovely location” overlooking the Great Ouse, owned for almost 30 years by Master of Wine John Hoskins, whose expertise is reflected in the “exceptional wine list” and on-site shop. Some diners feel the food is “pretty average” by comparison, but others feel it is “imaginative” enough and with “top-quality local ingredients”. For wine buffs, though, the cellar is sufficient attraction, as “the hotel has an excellent wine shop with two Enomatic wine dispensers, allowing for a great wine tasting experience as well as underpinning an exceptionally large by-the-glass selection”.

“This fine ivy-clad hotel/restaurant on the banks of the Great Ouse serves very stylish meals with a decent menu choice”. But “reflecting the interest of owner John Hoskins MW, the wine is the main thing rather than the food” – and there’s an on-site vintner’s, too.

“The food is fine, though perhaps not exceptional”, at this “very professional hotel restaurant”, but “the wine list is incredible”“selected by proprietor John Hoskins, Master of Wine”, who also runs the in-house vintner’s: there are “some real gems at very fair prices”, along with “a remarkable number of lovely and interesting wines by the glass”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
