Moved to larger premises in April 2021, although still on Lake Road.
Harden's survey result
Summary
Food and fell-running trips combine at the multi-tasking adventure brand’s bistro, whose eclectic dishes race all over the place and are “better than pub fare” (though the venue does enjoy a “quality pub ambience”) plus “good value” to boot. Their growing local empire includes Airstream-set burrito joint the Fellshack, cocktail and burger bar The Round, set on hallowed fell-running territory in Keswick’s Market Square, and (most recently) small hotel The Hazeldene, located on The Heads, a few minutes’ walk from the bistro.
Summary
“Fab pub with a great choice of local foods”: the ideal spot to recover from a yomp across the surrounding fells, with a bistro-style menu that “delivers every time”. It is part of a hybrid hospitality and outdoor adventure brand that escorts guests on fell-running excursions, then feeds them. The business also incorporates the Fellshack, a vintage Airstream trailer parked next door and selling burritos, and the Darkroom, a coffee shop around the corner. Note: more sedentary types are quite welcome to eat without running.
Summary
“Really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and excellent food” at this fast-growing hybrid food and outdoor adventure brand in the north Lakes. The original all-day café with a ‘world food’ menu that opened in 2017 moved into new premises last year, and has been followed by The Round, a bar and burger joint, and the Darkroom, a coffee bar. (The team also guides fell-running trips in the surrounding fells – team member Harry made his debut running for England in the November 2021 European championships – so you can work up an appetite the hard way!).
Summary
Positive feedback again – if still quite limited – for this all day deli/café strong on coffee, light bites and brunches; and which moonlights as a restaurant when a more eclectic, ‘world food’ type menu is served (from baked camembert to Louisiana Jambalaya, via potted shrimp). They must be doing something right, as in March 2019 they acquired a second site in this north Lakes town.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
