Harden's survey result
Summary
This famous country-house “continues to be a great location for special occasions” – more than 40 years after the late Imogen Skirving converted it from her family home. Long-serving exec chef Gary Booth pursued the seasonal and local route – including game from the nearby Belvoir estate – long before it became a bandwagon and continues to win solidly good ratings for his cuisine. The venue still has the personality of a family-run estate, with Imogen’s granddaughter Lila Arora nowadays at the helm.
Summary
“Outstanding cooking” – “impressive yet comforting” – is on the menu at this “well-loved country house – not too formal but everything just so” in a “beautiful rural setting” in the Belvoir Valley, with local produce including game from the nearby Belvoir estate well to the fore. Opened 40 years ago by the late Imogen Skirving in her family home, the hall’s regulars have ranged from Barbara Cartland to Jools Holland – and it’s “still quirky after Imogen’s passing (RIP)”, under her granddaughter Lila.
Summary
It's “always a pleasure to visit this hotel and restaurant in delightful surroundings” (the Belvoir Valley) even after three decades. “It’s the consistently high standards in all categories and an inherent approach to maintaining its own charm and quirky ambience that mark this establishment out as exceptional” – tribute to founder Imogen Skirving’s conversion of what was her family seat (a legacy continued by her granddaughter Lila in recent years).
Summary
A Belvoir Valley institution for 30 years, this family home-turned-country-house hotel is “ideal for good, old-fashioned courtship” thanks to its “beautiful grounds” and the “lovely” environment created by founder Imogen Skirving, who, after her inheritance, converted her family seat into a hotel – “it’s extra special if you stay over”. Four years on from her death, her granddaughter Lila has continued the good work, and even if the odd old-timer feels it’s “lost its sparkle since the loss of Imogen”, it still inspires little but praise for “first class cuisine delivered with flair”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Our second time here for a Friday lunch. The Country House setting is very quirky but you soon feel at home and the staff make sure the vibe is not at all stuffy. There is a good choice of options on the menu and the food was imaginative, very tasty and well presented"
