“A warm and intimate” little bistro of over 15 years’ standing near the Leeds Playhouse in traditional French style, with a blackboard menu. “It’s even better value if you take advantage of the early-bird deals”.

With its soundtrack of French music from the ’30s and ’40s, its dark, candle-lit tables and its blackboard menu of classic Gallic dishes, Halifax-born chef-patron Steve Kendell has recreated his ideal vision of a traditional French bistro, handily close to Leeds Playhouse – with very good atmosphere and service, but also full-flavoured cuisine – which has played to full houses for 16 years now.

“Intimate… delightfully eclectic” – there’s no shortage of plaudits for this “romantic” fixture, where there’s “no menu but all the choices are on a giant blackboard”. The overall effect is “just like dining in France…confit of duck, French onion soup, boeuf bourguignon etc.”, and the early-evening menu is “amazing value for money” too.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
