“Great views” are by all accounts the main highlight of a meal at Gordo’s Limehouse pub overlooking a bend in the river. But perhaps we expect too much of a chef happy to dish out a roasting to his peers: “I know a lot of people don’t like it, but it did what it said on the tin – it’s good pub food, and it’s only if you anticipated more that you’ll be disappointed”.

Inspiring views from a “wonderful location”, perched on a bend of the Thames, justify an outing to Gordo’s Limehouse pub – but why has such a prominent chef never managed to deliver consistently good cooking here? Granted, some reporters mention “lovely dining”, but others rate it “average” or even “terrible (after OK meals in the past)”.

“Always disappointing for the food, but the view saves it” sums up the general attitude toward Gordo’s Limehouse pub, which despite its celeb chef ownership has never reliably cut it gastronomically. The “standard brasserie fare” is “average” at the very best – it “could and should be so much better”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
