A “spectacular breakfast”“the options are hard to choose from, but none are a poor choice” – is the top culinary feature at these Kiwi haunts, whose zeitgeisty vibe and in-house roasting (omg the smell in Shoreditch!) makes them a magnet for a “top notch coffee” at any time of day.

“A top choice for breakfast and coffee” – the Shoreditch and London Fields outlets of this 20-year veteran of the Antipodean speciality coffee scene have imported the chilled, high-quality approach of its branches back home in Auckland and New Plymouth. In E2, the galvanising aroma of roasting coffee wafts up from the beans being ground in the basement, adding to its superb hipster vibe.

“The smell of the coffee being ground in the basement is intoxicating!” at this large, “hipster vibe” Shoreditch coffee shop, whose origins are down-under in New Zealand. “It has the perfect vibe for brunch and coffee”, with exposed brickwork and central island coffee bar – “the hot brunch dishes are decent, but the coffee is outstanding!” In late 2019, they opened a second branch (not counting Auckland and New Plymouth) in London Fields.

“Damn fine coffee! Nuff said!”“complex and expertly made” – is the focus at this “super-cool spot” in Shoreditch (the offshoot of an NZ original). The beans are “roasted downstairs” with wonderful aromas floating up from the big machines in the basement, while upstairs a “funky crowd enjoy food and drinks” from the “best breakfast” to late-night cocktails. A second London branch opened in Bethnal Green in late-2019.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
