“Is it actually a pub? Who cares when the food is remarkable?” – this “refreshingly different” converted corner-tavern in Barnsbury “takes you by surprise” with its “superb, punchy Indian food, served to you perched on a bar stool, amidst a crowded boozer vibe”. Opened in 2022, it’s quickly become one of the Top-100 most talked-about restaurants in our annual diners’ poll and lives up to the hype for most customers, even if “the elongated bar can feel a bit cramped and the interior becomes too noisy” (“on a balmy night, it’s great to sit outside”). “Delicious cocktails and a mean Bloody Mary too”. Top Menu Tip – “the lamb chops, the Lollipop chicken and the huge Bhatura will make you go back again and again”.

“Truly brilliant” – this desi pub (formerly the Cuckoo) in Barnsbury is one of the most talked-about openings of 2022 thanks to “stellar” cooking that’s “expertly spiced and oh-so-moreish”, washed down with “great cocktails and beers on tap”. On the downside, it is “squashed” and “oh-so-noisy” (“they won’t turn the music down!”) but most folks like its “bustling” style. “You have to plan ahead”“it’s very difficult to get a reservation unless you book four weeks in advance” – but “well worth the effort”.

Summary

The people behind Tamila in Hackney, chef Prince Durairaj and Glen Leeson (both ex-Roti King), took over the former Cuckoo pub in the middle of Barnsbury to launch this June 2022 newcomer: a South Asian restaurant, mixing small and large plates, accompanied by cocktails. In his early doors review, the Evening Standard’s Jimi Famurewa found dishes inspiring “plate-licking, wanton lust”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
