Outstanding and creative sandwiches, “fresh pastries” and “delicious brews” make this social-enterprise (it supports at-risk young East Londoners) one of the capital’s highest-rated café-bakeries. The “wonderful brunches” mean “it can get very busy round midday”, both at HQ in Dalston Junction and at the Green Lanes, Harringay offshoot. At the former, its street cred is enhanced by a grungy location down a side street from off the main drag. The latter is more civilised, with evening service, pizza and wine.

“Down a classic dodgy Dalston alleyway, this beautiful place awaits!” (there’s also an offshoot in Green Lanes, Haringey). “I love the good old Dusty Knuckle”, which inspires affection not just for its “absolutely top bread, pastries and sarnies” plus “excellent coffee”; but also for its social enterprise role supporting at-risk young East Londoners.

“What a brilliant bakery!”“the bread (especially the potato sourdough) is to die for”; “the pastries are also incredible” (“amazing sticky buns”), and “they serve a very decent filter coffee”. “The sandwiches are massive and always filled with interesting and delicious things”. Given that it’s a social enterprise, providing job training and mentorship to at-risk young people, “this small chain (branches in Dalston and Haringey) deserves all the praise it gets”.

Delicious breads and “lovely interesting sandwiches” have won acclaim for this hipster bakery in a Dalston car park, which helps get young offenders onto the straight and narrow. You can also book for eat-in pizza (Thu-Sat evenings only). In summer 2021, a second café and bakery opened on Haringey’s Green Lanes.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
