Summary
“The scene is set for romance before you even step through the door” at this “very impressive and spectacular” yearling, with its location “next to Paul Day’s sculpture of a couple kissing at St. Pancras International”. Set inside the station’s former ticket office (nowadays part of a glossy five-star hotel), “the majesty of the architecture is set off by elegant palm trees and it’s a calm and wonderful oasis” (complete with a 22m bar). The only potential shortcoming is the all-day brasserie menu: even some fans concede it’s “pricey” and there is the odd report of “really disappointing” dishes here. Top Menu Tip – “it’s always been a stunning space and – now it’s a restaurant – it’s the perfect place to crash a hotel breakfast!”; “beautifully executed afternoon tea” too.
Summary
During the pandemic, this fine space was given a lavish makeover and relaunched in late 2021, complete with eight 8-metre tall palm trees, striking pendant lights (made up of 267 brass leaves each), and a 22-metre long bar. The all-day menu created by chef Patrick Powell is a succession of luxurious bites (there’s a raw bar, salads, fish finger sarnie, steak…), making this “an excellent place for a good-quality and fairly priced bar-type meal” as you make the most of the extensive cocktail menu. In summer months, the hotel also runs a substantial roof garden along the same theme.
Summary
A “beautiful location” is the particular reason to seek out this this all-day operation, which oldies still recall as the grand ticket office of St Pancras station: nowadays converted in all its Victorian splendour, with an attractive atrium attached. It’s “a bit pricey” and “service is all over the place”, but – particularly for breakfast, or Sunday lunch – it can be an atmospheric choice on account of food that’s “reliable if not spectacular”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
