“A cosy gem” – this postcard-pretty Grade II listed Georgian tavern in a “lovely location” down a narrow street has been a must-visit in Hampstead village since Dr Johnson dropped in. It’s an “expensive” place to eat by pub standards, but it’s by no means a standard pub. “Go just for the real fire!”.

The rare treat of a relatively unmodernised Grade II listed Georgian tavern in Hampstead, visited by everybody from Dr Johnson to Liam Gallagher (although only the latter was barred, after an altercation with staff). “The quality of the food has improved”.

This “quaint relic from the 18th century” is a Grade II listed tavern on an attractive Georgian side-street in Hampstead. It serves “a fairly restricted menu” of “unmodernised pub food”, which can fit the bill for a Sunday roast or simple meal, but critics feel the cooking “really ought to be better”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
