Harden's survey result
Summary
This “ancient characterful tavern” by Hampstead Heath has hosted an impeccable list of literary tipplers in its long history from 1585, from Byron and Dickens to Bram Stoker and local poet John Keats, who listened to a nightingale in the walled garden. These days it serves “good fish ’n’ chips” and other pub staples, and an “excellent Sunday lunch”.
Summary
This ancient (circa 1585) wood-panelled inn at the top of of Hampstead Heath is drenched in historical and literary associations: Dick Turpin’s father was the landlord, Byron, Dickens and Bram Stoker all drank here, and Keats reputedly composed his Ode to a Nightingale in what is now a walled beer garden. But if you’re just after Sunday lunch, its leafy location and affordable scoff mean it’s “always popular and well attended”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
