“There’s an air of old-school sophistication as you enter” this “established Italian” with starched white linen “off an alleyway in Hampstead”. It scored consistently well this year for its “charming and helpful” service and “fab food, without fab prices”. Top Tip – “the wild boar ragu”.

“Classic old-school Italian” in a “lovely setting in Hampstead”, with white linen and walls living up to its name. Even some who consider it “an old favourite” acknowledge that the experience is “hit ’n’ miss”, with sometimes “snooty service” but it still draws an enthusiastic crowd: “my business days are over, but judging by the other diners there must be plenty of business going on!”

The dead cute location, off Hampstead High Street, and trattoria interior – with a “nice and old-fashioned feel” – has changed little in three decades at this enduring Italian. Some reporters are mightily impressed by the “delicious” traditional fare; for others it’s only average, with other gripes including “noise levels that make meaningful conversation difficult” or slightly “attitude-y” service.

This “very traditional Italian” in a prime Hampstead spot “hasn’t changed much (except the prices)” for the past three decades. Its enviable location, tucked away off the main drag, explains much of its appeal, as does a “formal but un-snooty” style that’s not to all tastes, but helps attract “lots of buzz (and some celebs!)”. Some fans applaud the fare as “well-cooked in generous portions”, others say it’s merely “fair”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
