This “classic family-run chippy” in West Hampstead has served “top-notch fish ’n’ chips or any grilled fish alternative at a more than fair price” for longer than anyone can remember. “George the owner is lovely” and “the staff welcome you like you’re family – once you’ve been a couple of times they’ll know your order off by heart”. “The dining room, though, is very basic and has the atmosphere of a station waiting room, with its fluorescent lighting”. Top Menu Tip – “the matzo meal batter is really light”.

“Old-fashioned in the best way”, this veteran West Hampstead chippy is known for “fantastic fresh fish ’n’ delicious chips” – hailed as “the best in the NWs”. “Matzo meal batter is light as a feather and not too greasy, and they can also do great grilled fish when you’re on a health kick”. The dining room remains “no-frills” despite a lockdown revamp and still “has a strip lighting aesthetic… but you don’t come for the ambience”.

“Delicious fresh fish”, “battered or crumbed in matzo meal”, and “friendly” service make this classic West Hampstead chippy stand out from the crowd. Even regulars who’ve “been coming for years” point out that “the restaurant could do with a makeover”… but we’ve been saying that for nearly three decades now, so are not exactly holding our breath!

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
