Harden's survey result
Summary
“Sooooo good Sri Lankan cooking!” – “spicy” with “fantastic ingredients and authentic flavours” – has won a major following for Cythia Shanmugalingham’s Borough Market two-year-old. “Frequented by a hip crowd”, it’s a lively place too and “watching the chefs at work in the open kitchen is a joy”, with much of the cooking over an open grill. “You need to order a lot to come out full though, which can make it a pricey pitstop”. Top Menu Tip – “top rotis”.
Summary
“A fantastic new Sri Lankan restaurant that really does things differently!”: cookbook author Cythia Shanmugalingham opened her Borough Market newcomer in late 2022, and the dishes from its open kitchen – with much use of open grills – generated excellent ratings in our annual diners’ poll. The press have utterly raved too: The Standard’s Jimi Famurewa discovered a “buzzy, tropical playground” and had “an unforgettable, palate-rattling trip”; The Times’s Giles Coren was “mesmerised by watching the chefs” and “such great use of different kinds of fire”; and the FT’s Tim Hayward thought the food “so good it could heal wounds”.
Summary
On the Borough Market site of a Konditor bakery, this 60-cover, two-floor spot will soon host the debut restaurant of Coventry-born Sri Lankan chef Cynthia Shanmugalingam. Opening in October 2022, it promises regularly changing menus featuring street food snacks and more substantial options.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Rambutan Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Great Tamil food at a bargain"
"Rambutan On sunday we payed our first to Rambutan in borough market for a Sri Lankan lunch. We unfortunately left with mixed feelings. When you book you advised that your table time is one hour and thirty minutes. We arrived fifteen minutes early but this wasn’t a problem as our table was ready. The thing was you are immediately told that your table will now need to be back ninety minutes from the time seated. They even send you an updated email. Now on to the food where we started with the Gundu Dosa and coriander sambol , Buttermilk Fried Chicken Wings with pol sambol and citrus pickle and the Deep Fried Roti with anchovy katta sambol. The flavour combination in each dish were amazing. For some reason had to keep the same cutlery and plates for our main courses. These of which arrived very quickly indeed. We were asked if we’d like another drink but due to the speed of the food arriving I didn’t see the point. We ordered the Black Pork Dry Curry , the Beef Cheek and Roasted Bone Marrow Rasam accompanied with white samba rice and a buttered roti. We also had a refreshing Pear , Daikon and Lime Leaf sambol. These dishes were nice but nothing special and not enjoyed as much as the starters. When the waitress cleared our table we had a nice chat and talked about which dishes we enjoyed the most. We then sat there for a few minutes before calling a waiter over to ask if the did any desserts as the are none on their website nor on the menu. We were told they don’t do desserts so just asked for the bill. This meant forty five minutes after arriving we left feeling quite disappointed especially as it took us an hour to get there. What I also noticed was that there were people in there before we arrived and were still there when we left. There also seemed to be tables being served at a more slower and relaxed pace. So I find it hard to work out why we were served so quickly when you consider we were told we had a ninety minute table time yet left in half that time."
"buzzing place with food to match! "
"Over all we enjoyed our experience at Rambutan but did fund a couple of the dishes / sauces so highly spiced that the main ingredients taste was lost. Service was ok and the wine was "murky" as it was "organic" when questioned ? The second glass was clear ? "
